The video above demonstrates the installation of the 3 in 1 pipe boot gasket on a 2″ pipe. There is a larger gasket I use exclusively for the 3″ pipe boot because it covers the top of the pipe boot much better. Most of the time the old pipe boot will develop a leak where the rubber ring deteriorates around the pipe itself and these new rubber gaskets will solve that problem. Always be sure the hard plastic or metal flange at the base of the pipe boot is tightly nailed to the roof. Oftentimes, if the base is loose, water may enter through the nail holes and damage the roof sheathing. Sometimes removing loose nails and sealing the holes from the underside of the shingle is the best course of action. This DIY roof repair is easy to accomplish, but being as safe as possible on the roof is more important. One thing I usually do to be safer with my ladder is flip the pivoting feet forward to allow the ladder to dig into the ground. Decks are often slippery and will allow the ladder to slide away from the house. The bottom of the ladder should be secured. Another safety measure I take is to tie a ladder rung to the gutter since it is easy for a ladder to slide along that smooth surface. Finally, remember to focus your attention on the task of being safe. Distractions should be minimized because every motion is important since gravity is the undisputed law of the land.
